Border Information Documentation Requirements
If you are driving across the border, you will need to have both photo identification AND proof of American (or Canadian) citizenship for every person in the vehicle. This can be provided as two separate documents (driver's license and birth certificate), or as a single document (passport). Children under 18 years old will only need to provide a proof of citizenship. Note, that if you are traveling with children under the age of 18, and they are not accompanied by BOTH
parents, it is advisible for them to carry a note signed by the missing parent(s). If you are flying across the border, you will need to provide a passport. The two-document option is NOT available for flying. For details, check out the US Customs and Border Protection website at: Border Crossings
When driving across the border (Northbound I-5), there are two main border crossings available.
If you stay on the highway until it ends, you will end up going through the Peace Arch crossing.
Once through the peace arch crossing, you will be Northbound on Hwy 99, which will take you through
the tunnel and into Richmond. Just before the I-5 ends, if you take exit #275, you can take a slight detour and cross at the Pacific
Highway truck crossing. (It's called the truck crossing because that's where trucks have to go.
Passenger vehicles are welcome at both locations)
Once you cross the pacific highway crossing, you can continue until the main light at 8th Avenue, take a left, and continue
until you come to the onramp to Hwy 99 (with roundabouts). Take a right to get onto Hwy 99 North, and then continue until you go through the tunnel and into Richmond. There are other crossing available further east, but they involve fairly significant detours, and would only be used to combat huge lineups at the normal crossings. Border Wait Times
AM 730 - Traffic and Weather all day Once you reach Bellingham, tune to AM 730 on your car radio. This radio station does nothing but report on traffic in the Richmond/Vancouver area. You shouldnt have to listen for more than 10 or 20 minutes to get a border crossing report. Southbound delays usually get more attention approaching a long weekend. If you have any questions regarding the border or directions to the meeting room, feel free to call Steve Coleman at 604-725-4795. |
